The urinary system is composed of the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra. The urinary system is responsible for filtering wastes (from the blood) and producing urine. The urinary system can be further broken down into the kidneys and urinary tract (ureters, urinary bladder, urethra).
The kidneys
The kidneys filters the blood.
The urinary tract
The urinary tracts collects and transports the final waste product urine.
Nephron
the nephron is the structural and functional unit of the kidney.
Functions of Urinary system:
storage of urine
The bladder, an expandable muscular sac, stores the urine that is being constantly produced until an appropriate time for urine excretion.
Excretion of urine
Micturition or urination is the process of expelling urine from the bladder through the ureter out the body.
regulation of blood volume
The kidneys control hormonally the blood volume and blood pressure.
regulation of erythrocyte production
The kidneys produce erythropoietin in response to low blood-oxygen level which stimulate RBC production in the bone marrow.
acid-base ballance
The kidneys control the body's ion balance (Na+, K+, PO4-3) as well as hydrogen ion (H+) and ammonium (NH4+) secretion and bicarbonate (HCO3-) re-absorption.
